SUMMARY:LALIBELA: WONDERS AND MYSTERY
DESCRIPTION:A fascinating documentary about the 900+ year old historic la
ndmark of Lalibela\, which consists of 11 rock-hewn Eastern Orthodox chu
rches in Ethiopia. Some 900 years ago\, King and Chief Priest Lalibela c
onstructed these churches out of basalt rock high in the mountains of no
rthwestern Ethiopia. The geometric precision of the construction amazes
modern architects. The sewage system is still intact. The mural painting
s and sculptures inside the buildings astonish visitors. Major events of
the Bible are represented in the architecture. The film examines the my
stery behind the design and architecture of the churches. How was it pos
sible to create 11 churches from solid rock in only 23 years? Modern arc
hitects\, church and art historians\, engineers\, and artists provide in
 sight

ccounted for over 250\,000 deaths\, one million displaced persons\, and

ould end. This film tells their extraordinary story. Through simple test

SUMMARY:THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ELEGANT
DESCRIPTION:West Coast Premiere - This is the story of one of the most un
usual clubs in the world: La SAPE. Its members\, the Sapeurs\, come from
the Democratic Republic of Congo and have elevated fashion to the statu
s of a religion. Despite extreme economic hardships the Sapeurs will onl
 y settle for the likes of Roberto Cavalli\, Yohji Yamamoto\, Versace\, I
ssey Miyake and Burberry. Set to the soundtrack of Congo's extraordinary
music\, the film follows the cult's founder and spiritual father\, Papa
Wemba\, the world-famous musician known as 'Le Roi De La Sape' (The Kin
g of la Sape). The film starts with Wemba's release on bail in July 2003
from French prison after being charged with smuggling illegal immigrant
s into Europe for profit. For several months\, the filmmakers followed W
emba trying to piece his life back together. Threatened with legal fees
and an upcoming trial\, he recorded a new album and prepared for an extr
avagant concert in Paris. Meanwhile his followers\, Congolese immigrants
living in Paris and Brussels\, were busy living the Sapeur lifestyle -
constantly hustling for money\, keeping up with Papa Wemba's fashion ide
ology\, and pursuing a 'dedication' by Wemba\, who is paid a lot of mone
y by his fans in order to sing their names in his new album. Bragging an
d boasting\, loud and proud\, constantly advertising themselves and each
other\, they are stars on a stage they mentally construct in the absenc

DESCRIPTION:When life doesn’t turn out the way you expect it\, sometimes
the best thing you can do is laugh. Comedian Keith Price knows that less
on all too well\, having encountered not only wildly enthusiastic cheers
\, but also less-than-supportive jeers in both his personal and professi

in EBONY CHUNKY LOVE: BITCH CAN’T GET A DATE\, a documentary that takes
a look at Price’s struggles to get noticed both in relationships and in

SUMMARY:BLACK AUGUST
DESCRIPTION:Seattle Premiere - The story of Black Panther George Jackson'
s life through to his death in 1971 at the hands of San Quentin Prison g
uards. Inmate activist George Lester Jackson’s (CSI's Gary Dourdan) shor
t life became a flashpoint for revolution igniting the bloodiest riot in
San Quentin’s history. Black August tells the story of the last event-f
illed months of Jackson’s journey from street tough to political martyr.
After moving with his family from Chicago to Los Angeles\, Jackson was
arrested for a $70 gas station robbery and received a sentence of one ye
ar to life. During his eleven years in prison\, Jackson studied Marx\, M
ao and other revolutionary thinkers. He channeled the explosive rage of
an oppressed and exploited community into a powerful indictment of the r
acial status quo in a series of passionate and poetic letters that were
collected and published in the volume Soledad Brother. Part of a legacy
that includes Eldridge Cleaver\, Bobby Seale\, Huey P. Newton and Angela
  Davis\, Jackson’s writings made him both a best-selling author and a li
ghtning rod for controversy in one of America’s most politically polariz
ed eras. \nPost screening discussion with Seattle Black Panther Party

SUMMARY:DEATH OF TWO SONS
DESCRIPTION:Seattle Premiere - On Feb. 4\, 1999\, four New York City Poli
ce officers killed African immigrant Amadou Diallo on his own doorstep i
n a hail of 41 bullets. The inhumanity of Amadou's death outraged Africa
n-Americans\, so often the victims of such violence themselves\, and peo
ple of all ethnicities took to the streets in protest.\n\nAnd yet\, desp
ite all the publicity\, how many of those marching in Diallo's name coul
d tell you what his native language was or place Guinea on a map? Jesse
Thyne knew Amadou's history better than any other American. An exuberant
Peace Corps volunteer from Pasadena\, CA\, Jesse was assigned to Amadou
's home village in Guinea\, West Africa. He'd been "adopted" by members
of Amadou's family and lived in their house. While Amadou sold hats and
gloves on a New York City street corner to save money for college\, Jess
e was learning to speak the local language and teaching Guinean children
math. When Amadou died\, people in Guinea turned to Jesse for an expla
nation. Jesse was present at Amadou's funeral\, where he sat with the Di
allo family and served as a translator for American journalists.\nIn Jan
uary of 2000\, almost a year to date after Amadou's death\, Jesse was ki
lled in a brutal car accident on a Guinean highway. The taxi driver resp
onsible for Jesse's death spent three years in a Guinean prison - a hars
 her-than-usual punishment. Amadou's killers walked free. Jesse's death\
, like Amadou's\, was used as a rallying cry against endemic problems. W
hile thousands of Americans protested Amadou's death\, thousands of Guin
eans came together to march for road safety awareness in a country notor
ious for reckless driving. Like Amadou\, Jesse was repatriated to his ho
me soil for burial. Both families had premonitions and dreams foreshadow
ing the deaths of their sons\, and both deaths had a profound spiritual
impact on their nation's religious communities.\nBeyond examining the br
oad societal aspects of these events\, the film leads us to a very perso
nal truth: that the loss of any human life is equally tragic. Death of T
wo Sons shows the common humanity shared by these young men\, their fami
 lies\, and their nations.

SUMMARY:THE PEDAGOGY OF CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:The power of motion pictures to effect change in society is n
ot nurtured by the traditional methods of consumption. Instead\, its’
true power of consciousness raising is inherent in the method of product
ion. \n\nAccording to Paulo Freire\, the author of Pedagogy of the Oppr
essed\, there are two basic methods of teaching or pedagogy. One design
ed by the teacher for the student\, in which it is assumed that the teac
her has knowledge and the student is without knowledge. The alternative
is a dialogical teaching method\, with the area for study delineated in
an interaction between teacher and student. The goal of this method is
to perceive the processes\, which create reality and the place of the p
articipants in those processes. \n\nThe challenge for filmmakers of the
future is to find a way to bring about the involvement of oppressed peo
ple in the production process of the filmmaking experience. In the new m
illennium\, filmmakers must come to know that the liberating power of fi
lm to change social consciousness is not in how a film is watched\, but
how it is created.	\n\nAlonzo Crawford (MFA\, Columbia University) has w
ritten and directed a number of documentary and dramatic short and featu
re-length films\, notably: CROWDED (documentary\; an exposure of conditi
 ons inside the Baltimore City Jail\; 15 min.\, B/W\, 1997). DIRT\, GRO
UND\, EARTH\, AND LAND (docudrama\; about urban housing and tenant right
 s\, 117 min.\, color and B/W\, 1983) and WALK ON WHITE NAILS (dramatic f
 eature\; a scathing look at interracial intimacy\; 90 min.\, B/W\, 1991)
. MORNING TATE is a dramatic short about the sedentary life of an elderl
 y man\, momentarily enliven by the spontaneity of youth\, color\, 30 min
.\, staring Mr. Whitman Mayo\, A.K.A.\, Grady from the TV sitcom\, SANFO
RD AND SON). Current productions are A SEPARATE PLACE (documentary\; ab
out the schools built by P.S. DuPont in Wilmington\, DE)\, WINTER WHEAT
 (35mm feature on domestic violence)\, CAN’T RESIST (35mm music-video)\,
and GILA MONSTER: The Adventures of Adrian Manx\, (35mm work in progress
)\, THE MATING GAME: (35 mm short film based on the book by Jonathan Luc
 kett).

SUMMARY:THIS IS THE LIFE
DESCRIPTION:Seattle Premiere - In 1989\, a collective of young artists ga
thered weekly at a small health food store in South Central LA called "T
he Good Life.” Their mandate? To explore and expand the musical bounda
ries of hip hop. \n \nTHIS IS THE LIFE tells the little known story of a
group of teenagers\, who revolutionized hip hop by innovating the very
rhyme patterns\, melodic concepts and lyrical styles used by many of tod
ay's biggest rap stars.\n \n \nWhile their innovations have yielded bil
lions of dollars for the recording industry\, the Good Life emcees have
toiled in relative obscurity in the United States. But much like their
jazz heroes of a bygone era\, these street poets have garnered a rabid a
nd musically sophisticated fan base abroad\, with a cult-like following
 in Germany\, Australia\, France\, England and Japan.\n \n \n\nThis feat
ure-length documentary\, directed by former Good Life emcee Ava DuVernay
\, chronicles the rise and fall of an unusual family of artists\, while
examining their obstacles to commercial success. They all took differen
t paths\, but remain connected by the music they made\, the alternative
hip hop movement they developed\, and their worldwide influence on the a
rt form. \n\n \n\nTHIS IS THE LIFE \n\n“Meet The Movement” \n\nwww.goo
